Orthopaedic trauma is any severe injury to the bones, joints, and/or soft tissue that is caused by an external source. These injuries are often the result of a sudden incident, such as a road traffic accident or fall, but not always. Trauma can also be caused by overuse.

Some of the most common injuries that are most effectively treated by an orthopaedic trauma specialist are:

An arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery used to diagnose and treat problems with joints.

It's most commonly used on the knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hips.

Arthroscopy equipment is very small, so only small cuts in the skin are needed. This means it has some advantages over "open" surgery, including:

Carpal tunnel syndrome
</h3>
<p>
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition of the hand and wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome starts with tingling or numbness in fingers and thumb, progressing to pain. If left untreated, it can cause such severe weakness. When the diagnosis is made, the first treatment is often simple rest. Many patients need nothing further. Some may benefit from wearing a splint, especially at night or when doing repetitive motions, to keep the wrist from bending and creating more pressure on the median nerve. Oral medications may help ease pain, while steroid injections fight inflammation. Wrist surgery can be an option. Some patients do become candidates for surgery. Even then, there’s a choice. The traditional surgical approach is an open incision through the palm. A newer alternative is endoscopy, which involves routing a tiny instrument through a smaller incision in the wrist.
